Robert S. Windholz
Early life
Attorney Robert S. Windholz was born in Newark, New Jersey and raised in the small town of Roselle, New Jersey. He attended public schools and played basketball and baseball at the varsity level before graduating in 1959. Bob learned the value of hard work at an early age. Both of his parents worked, his father as a CPA in private practice until the early 1950s when he became a contract reviewer with the Dept. of Defense, USAF. His mother worked as a bookkeeper almost until her death in 2002. Bob's parents were devoted to Bob and his sister.
Bob's family lived in a garden apartment unit until he was 17. Air conditioning was a luxury and in the warm, humid New Jersey summers it was common to sleep on the second story fire escape to escape the uncomfortable climate.
College
Bob attended Lafayette College in Easton, Pennsylvania for two years before transferring to Rutgers University in New Jersey where he obtained his B.A. degree in 1964.
Military
On July 15, 1964 Bob entered the Navy's aviation officer candidate program in Pensacola, FL in pre-flight class 28-64. In October 1964 he was commissioned as an officer in the U.S. Navy and began NAO School at Pensacola until the spring of 1965. Bob attended various Navy technical schools through 1965 and eventually was assigned to a Navy Squadron at NAS Quonset Point. The squadron was being downsized in late 1966 and Bob applied to and was accepted in the Navy's Russian language program, where he spent 47 weeks of instruction at the Defense Language Institute East Coast.
In 1967 Bob was assigned to the Naval Security Group, a service cryptology agency operating in coordination with the National Security Agency. After some additional training he was assigned to an operational base in the Philippines from which he served as an Officer in Charge of on-board detachments in the Gulf of Tonkin during most of 1968. The class of ships was guided missile frigates (DLG) and the detachments worked directly for the commanding officer and his staff. These ships operated within 12 miles of the North Vietnamese coast at various times. In April 1970, after nearly six years in the Navy, Bob received an honorable discharge and became a civilian again.
The one memory of note from his military experience was being a witness, with others, to an action in which the Congressional Medal of Honor was awarded to a navy helicopter pilot, Lt. junior grade, Clyde Lassen. Please visit the Navy heritage page for this story with video.
Legal career
An AV® Peer Review RatedSM attorney by Martindale-Hubbell®, Bob earned his J.D. from Emory University Law School in 1973. Bob had considered a legal career during college, and was involved in a few court martials while serving in the Navy. The challenges of the law had always held a fascination for Bob and he contemplated a legal career in the last years of his Navy service. His initial thought about the legal system was a kinship for the underdog and championing those rights fits in naturally with a personal injury practice. Bob is not a fan of insurance companies or their "fellow travelers" but understands the need for some entity to fund (in exchange for premium charges) those persons injured at the hands of careless companies and individuals.
Even before graduation from Emory, Bob began working with a prominent Atlanta attorney, Joseph M. Salome (deceased). In June 1973, after being sworn in as a licensed attorney, Bob practiced as an associate attorney with Mr. Salome, whose practice focused on criminal law and other areas of general practice, including personal injury.
In 1976 Bob began his own practice in Atlanta and by 1979 was beginning to concentrate and focus his practice in the area of personal injury. In 1980 he attended a one-week trial seminar sponsored by the Association of Trial Lawyers (ATLA) and upon his return devoted himself more intensely to enforcing the rights of persons injured by the negligence of others. In late 2008 Bob moved his practice to its present location.
